Field Notes is the student literary magazine for St. Michael Catholic High School. Managed and produced by our Journalism class, each issue is a collection of our students’ creative writing, artistic, photographic, and musical creations centered around a common theme. Our aim is to create a space where we can draw attention to the beauty present in the community of St. Michael and the world around us. God provides us with beautiful things to magnify His glory; beholding beauty is a way to grow closer to Him. This is our second year to engage in this project and we are excited to continue the mission for what we hope will be a meaningful and enduring publication for our school community.
Each year a new theme is chosen as an inspirational launching point for the students' creative work. Our team has selected a theme for this year: Jubilee.
"Jubilee", in relation to our community, is a rare, natural phenomenon where bottom-dwelling sea animals come to the surface in search of oxygen. Creatively, a jubilee provides ample inspiration for artistic work. It's a unique event that brings our family and community together in search of colorful crustaceans, shimmering sea life, and beautiful memories.
"Jubilee", more expansively, is best described as happiness or an occasion of rejoicing, festivity, happiness, and freedom. Jubilee is an act of celebration. We can actively live out what it means to be jubilant and express it through art.
“Jubilee” is also present specifically in our faith life this year. 2025 is a “Year of Jubilee” in the Catholic Church, which only happens every 25 years. This Jubilee is themed "Pilgrims of Hope,” in which Catholics are encouraged to focus on conversion, repentance, renewal, and acts of mercy. This exciting, rare occurrence in the church might lead to submissions based on one's celebration of and devotion to faith, or perhaps the grace in renewal.
What else might Jubilee mean to you? Submissions can be emailed to [email protected]
