The St. Michael Catholic High School Model United Nations (UN) Team
competed at the 16th Annual University of Alabama Model UN (ALMUN) Conference
where the team won six awards, the second most among participating schools.
On Friday, February 16 th , 2024, 16 St. Michael students traveled to Tuscaloosa,
Alabama to participate in the 16th Annual University of Alabama Conference, competing
against over 100 delegates from 10 Alabama schools, including such Model UN
powerhouses as Spain Park and Bob Jones High School. Through the conference, the
students served as working diplomats, addressing such timely issues as vaccine hesitancy, food security, and Arctic resources and serving in crisis committees based on Ancient Ninevah, the Hunger Games books, and the Fall-Out video game series.
As a result of their research, committee participation, and country representation,
the Saint Michael students received six awards, the second most among participating
schools. Caity Beaman earned the Book Award for her essay on how Model UN has
impacted her life while Grace Campbell and John Newman each earned a Position Paper
Award for their research and writing skills. Sophie Musselman and John Newman won
two of the seven Best Delegate Awards presented at the conference, the highest
individual speaking award. In addition, Jack Garrison won a Verbal Commendation.
